Road trip to Geraldton 

A couple of months ago my friends and I were racking our brains trying to think of somewhere to go for Easter. Having 4 days off meant we could go somewhere a bit further and have some extra time to explore. We’ve done Down South a lot so now was the opportunity to head North. My friend a Bec suggested Sunset Beach Holiday Park. It’s 5 minutes out of Geraldton and right on the beach.


We took off on Good Friday at 8am-ish (I held us up, this time I was struggling to find my camera lens cover). The first stop along the way was the Pinnacles. They are a natural wonder located in Cervantes, tall pointy limestone structures that formed in the last Ice Age 500,000 years ago. It a national park so you pay $11 per car to get in which covers the upkeep. We did the 45 minute walk first. There are little claw signs to follow that show you which way to go. Afterwards you can do the 5 minute drive trail which takes you through a different area.




After all that scenery we had built up a hunger and decided it was time to checkout the famous “Lobster Shack” about 20 minutes away in Cervantes. They have a small menu but do it well. The menu is pretty much just fish or Crayfish, but I guess that’s what you go for. There was about a half an hour wait, understandable on Good Friday and with all the tour buses that make a stop there. Bec got the Fried Spanish Mackeral with chips and Coleslaw for $20 and Thanya and I got the Half small chargrilled crayfish with chips and coleslaw for $33. The menu said it had garlic hitter but I didn’t get any hints of that. It was very delicious though, really sweet. If I went again I’d probably get the medium size but I polished off the chips and was full to the brim. Bec said the Mackarel was scrumptious, a nice light batter that went beautifully with a fresh wedge of lemon.


We checked into our accomodation that afternoon and Bec made us some delicious ‘Fluffy Bunnies’. A thick chocolate milkshake with malt served in a Chocolate Bunny. Indulgent but worth every calorie. The Holiday Park had put on Fish and Chips but we couldn’t fathom eating any more everything  we’d had that day.


Saturday began with some Coffee at the Beached Barrel, a quirky coffee and treat shop on the Geraldton foreshore. The old Skreets building has been turned into a pop up shop so we strolled around that and checked out the books, antiques and second hand bookstore.


I saw on the ‘Everything  Geraldton’ site they had a Farmers Market in Maitland Park. It was pretty small, perhaps due to everyone being away for the holidays. You could pick up some fresh eggs and honey, a couple of vegetables or some needlework. We had a stroll around the foreshore and the shops before consulting Zomato for a good lunch spot. We settled on Cafe Fleur a cute place with a big selection of teas and a tasty lunch menu. I had the Eggplant and Haloumi Salad for $22, it was very healthy and fresh with a yummy dollop of hummus. Thanya had the Steak Stack, topped with bacon and egg and some delish tomato relish. Bec had the Chicken stack, also on sourdough with some Mango relish and a zesty coleslaw.


That afternoon I finally checked out Sunset Beach. It was pretty but a very high tide and more kitesurfing than swimming conditions.


For dinner we went out to the Freemason’s hotel in the centre of town.Its a beautiful old pub with some lively bartenders. It didn’t seem that busy but most tables were taken and there was an hour wait for food. Bec and I had the fish off the day which was Spanish Mackarel grilled in butter with salad and chips for $30. A tad on the overcooked side but we polished it off. Thanya had Mussels in a Spanish Chilli sauce for $22 served with Turkish bread. I loved the sauce and helped her finish off the Turkish bread. The chocolate pudding was tempting for $10 but I decided on a cocktail instead. Thanya and I shared a carafe off the ‘Sex on the Beach’  for $25 it was very fruity and not heavy on the alchohol. About 9pm some live music started and later you had the opportunity to sing some karaoke.


We decided to check out some more Geraldton nightlife and walked past The Provincial Wine Bar which looked like it had a good vibe going. We kept going and checked out the Geraldton Hotel.The inside bar had a skimpy so we headed to the outside bar where there was a heavy rock band called ‘Third gear’, there was a range of ages there but mainly a young crowd (much younger than me) so at 1030pm we called it a night.

Sunday was an early start as there were lots of Kalbarri sights to see and it is an hour and a half drive from Geraldton. We started off at the Pink Lakes  which are just over an hour north of Geraldton and just after  the turn off for Kalbarri a national park. They are a very pretty spot and keep an eye out for the words Pink Lake written in salt on the lake.


Next it was time to speed off to Natures Window. We got there just before 12 and it was already difficult to get a park. It’s a 500m walk to the window or you can continue and walk the loop which is 3-5 hours. We decided on the window and a little bit extra which is a good idea as there are some beautiful extra cliff faces just further on.


Despite only a mini trek we were all hungry and thirsty set off back to Kalbarri town to get a feed. There weren’t many places to choose from so we let Trip Advisor pick our destination and ended up at Angie’s Cafe. Don’t go if your after something fancy! It is a down to earth eatery catering to the dine in and take away crowd with burgers, chips, fried chicken, quiches and the like.


Next it was time to check out the expanse of coast line that Kalbarri has to offer. Each look out had something stunning and different to see. We checked out Mushroom Rock, Rainbow Valley, Pot Alley, Eagle Gorge, Shellhouse Grandstand, Island Rock and the Natural Bridge. There is a path connecting all of them but after a hectic morning we opted to drive between them all and use our energy for the walk down to Eagle Gorge Beach.


That night an early one was had as all that exploring and chocolate bunny eating had all of us spent.

On Monday it was sadly time to depart our cute holiday home and start the trek back to Perth. To start with we visited the HMAS Sydney memorial on the advice of my Mum and a lady at the Farmers market. It was definitely worth seeing and has a great view of the town of Geraldton.


To cut the journey into two we stopped in at Lancelin to have a pub feed at the Endeavour tavern. As always it was a great feed and excellent portion sizes. I went for the acclaimed Steak Sandwich, Bec had a gigantic plate of Nachos from the ‘light menu’ and Thanya ordered the Snapper with Garlic Prawns. Our last meal before reality hit and we were back to Perth for a night at home before back to our day jobs so we can save for our next trip!


Mandurah Crab Fest 2017 

The Crab Fest is Mandurahs biggest weekend and has been going for years. I can remember going way back when I was 13 and I’ve loved seeing how it has evolved over the years. In earlier years it was a chance to go on rides and get some junk food! This year the highlights for me were the street food, the art and the live music. I was a bit concerned with the overcast day that they might struggle to get a good turnout but it was packed, perhaps a bit too much for my slightly hungover brain, the Crab Fest coincided with St Patrick’s day! The performing arts was a good retreat from the bustle and showcased some amazing local art that you can purchase. 

The stalls wrapped right around from the performing arts down to the end of the foreshore, almost a 2 kilometre stretch. There were lots of artists going work ‘en plain air’, it was cool to see works in progress and also an opportunity to pick up some affordable local art.

There were heaps of specials on with local businesses including a $10 cruise.

Food options were endless with about 50 food stalls as well as local restaurants having crab specials. We ended up deciding on the crab arancini and crab quesadilla from The Spanish Quesadilla. So incredibly tasty and freshly made to order.

There was heaps of stuff for kids including this bubble area, super cute! 

For the adults there were live cooking demonstrations, beer gardens and live music. Crab Fest is an awesome day out and free to go to, definately worth putting in your calendar for next year.


Paddle Boarding at Palm Beach

One of my most exciting Christmas presents this year was a Paddle Boarding session. My colleague Darren said it was very celebrity of me. I thought it was a great idea, my friends are mostly of the age and wage that if something is important for us we can buy it ourselves. I think it’s nice to get people a present you can do together and stay fit at the same time. I’ve heard people say it looks hard, but it’s pretty much standing and paddling.  The boards are so sturdy you usually only manage to fall off if your not standing in the middle of the board or you’re trying to do yoga (guilty!).

It was a stunning and sunny Sunday and we headed down to Palm Beach. Palm beach is one of Rockinghams beaches, just south of the main foreshore strip and a 40 minute drive from Perth City. We chose the 11am session on Sunday (just in case any of us were under the weather) which was good as there was just a slight amount of wind. If your Paddling Boarding in the Rockingham/Fremantle area I would remember the sea breeze and the later you go the more of a workout you’re going to get! We went with Wasup Boards which was $25 for an hour hire. We mentioned we had paddle boarded before but got a quick refresher lesson. Basically stand with your feet either side of the hand grip. Have the handle of your oar about hip height and make sure the bottom is submerged into the water so you’re pushing through with each stroke. If you want to turn around paddle backwards or stroke further away from the board in a half circle motion.

Previous times I have been for an hour but this time we had 2 and it was nice to take our time and raft up to a buoy for a quick float in between paddling up and down the beach. I would really recommend it as a weekend activity to enjoy the beach, sun and workout with your friends without really noticing you’re exercising.

Wine tour: Yarra Valley

Being in Melbourne for just over a week and definite wine lovers it was only natural that Thanya and I would come across the idea to go on a Yarra Valley wine tour. We researched a few but ended up liking the write up for ‘Dancing Kangaroo tours’, they included 3 wineries, a brewery, a cheese factory a chocolate factory and lunch at a café all for a reasonable price of $145.

We were picked us up from Central Melbourne opposite Flinders St Station (handy for my public transport lyf) in our little coach bus. Tours are limited to 11 people which was  a good size, small enough to have time to taste lots of wine but large enough for someone to buy a bottle when your not feeling a particular cellar door! Our tour guide and driver for the day was Johnson. Our tour group was made up of 7 from Perth, 2 from Sydney and 2 from the Gold Coast. Johnson filled us in on some of his Melbourne tips including making sure to try the Asian food in North Richmond. He said there is a half kilometre stretch of amazing food so good that once you’ve passed the first version of a restaurant you might find the number 2 further down the street.

We ventured out to the Yarra via the picturesque town of Donvale and Lilydale, everywhere was so pretty and green and lots of farm animals.

The first stop of the day was St Huberts, a vineyard dating back to 1862. Dominic was a great host going into as much detail as we wanted about each wine, going into the processes and letting us sample a large tasting range. I loved the wines there, the history was evident in the complex flavours of each. There was tasting notes supplied that went into great detail about the composition in each one, how it was made and the flavours you could expect. A very quaint place and my favourite wines of the day! Really enjoyed the Rousanne a white varietal I haven’t stumbled across before.

Next up was Helen and Joey Estate. On the way Johnson told us the  story of how this couple from China came out on a wine tour to the Yarra years ago and fell in love with the place. They ended up purchasing a property that had dwindled down to a grape farm until they decided to reinvigorate it and start the orchard all over again. Its hard to believe it had a period of not being a winery with its amazing panoramic views. Despite being on a hefty amount of wine tours over the years its the best views I’ve had to accompany a tasting. A cute quirk of the place is the Unicorns featured around the property, there is even a large one on the deck that your are allowed to sit on, an Instagrammers utopia! Once again it was really nice to have a Cellar Door manager that was so passionate about the process. Steven educated us on the geography of the area and the great lengths the winemakers have gone to including sourcing an award winemaker to work with them full time. The wines very delicious and very drinkable, we were all impressed.

Then it was time for a break from wine into the Yarra Valley Dairy. Well I have never had such amazing cheese in my life! We each had about ten different tastes and each one was as tasty as the next. Thanya is still going on about the Chevre and Dill goats cheese and it’s been 2 days. Part of me wishes there was a Perth franchise, the other part of me is slightly grateful as my diet might subsist of cheese if it was a bit closer. The other tour members stocked up on cheese but as we were hitting the town that night we forced to leave the cheese as a tantalising memory.

Falls Festival: Freo 

I’d always wanted to to Falls Festival. Ever since I was old enough to follow which festivals were on it always seemed to have in my opinion the best line up of local and international acts. Perhaps I was their target audience given I love the soulful, alternative and rock bands that tend to play. I always envied my friends flying over to Byron Bay to camp and see acts such as Bloc Party, SBTRKT, the Cat Empire and 2 Door Cinema club in the pasta. Luckily for me they decided to come to my state, a leisurely train ride away in Fremantle.

As you can see below it was smack bang on the streets literally blocking of various businesses or connecting them into the festival. It certainly would have boosted tourism that weekend with 14,000 people drifting in and out of the confines.

Tickets were $250 which was a big chunk of the pay check but pretty regular for festivals these days. Being the fiscally responsible responsible person I am there were a few predrinks before hand at my friend Michaels house and  maybe a sneaky roadie on the way.

At 28 I almost feel like I’m getting on as far as festival goers go and I had to survive two days so we arrived at 3pm knowing that we would be there til 11pm. The age range on the first day was definately on the youthful side with the age range predominantly the 18-25 year old set with smatterings of people in their 30s and 40s. The stand out fashion seemed to be to wear tiny pieces of underwear and then a sheer dress over the top. This was rocked by about 1 in 20 girls. The fashion was ridiculous, I was loving it and it made for incredible people watching. Everyone seemed to be showing off their bodies, their brightly coloured clothes or their glitter covered faces with pride.

We got there just in time for Aluna George. I’m loving the duos catchy pop synth vibe that seems to perfectly tread the line between dance and chill out music. Their song ‘I Remember’ is getting a lot of airtime at the moment and I can see why with its cute lyrics about wanting to go back to that incredible time when you first meet someone when that feeling is so far gone. Next up was Golden Features who I was super excited to see given how much I have been listening to Wolfie featuring Julia Stone, such a hypnotic tune! People often talk about the merits of seeing a DJ live but personally I think there’s nothing like being right there and dancing with thousands of people with the person who produced it. I have no idea how he lasted that long in the heat with his gold mask!

There was a mid Festival alchoholic outing to Sandrino. I like to think of this as good economics as it was a bit cheaper than Festival prices. I haven’t been to Sandrino in forever and it was nice to see that their Italian Sausage pizza was just as delicious. The saltiness of this was balanced with the sweetness of tomato and eggplant and the feta gave it a rich creaminess. The crab linguine was also super tasty with rich garlic and tomato sauce.

Last up on Saturday night was  Violent Soho. As per usual they were astounding. They know how to put on a show and have the whole crowd rocking out. Their last song was ‘Covered in Chrome’, everyone was singing along at the top of their longs and the vibe was electric. Certainly finished the last day on a high!

Sunday had a very different vibe to it. The crowed seemed a tad older, mostly people in their 30s and it felt like an amped up Sunday sesh. I got there just after 3 again and in time for Jamie T. Considering how much my 18 year old self listened to ‘Sheila’ I was a little excited. The rest of the crowd seemed to know the lyrics too so I think the Cockney poet has quite a following in WA too!

The standout on Sunday for me was Broods. The strong ethereal voice of the singer Georgia Nott was just as beautiful in person and there was nothing like hearing it under the dark starlit sky. 

I thoroughly enjoyed Falls. It was nice to return to the Music and community based focus instead of the sweaty, boozey danced fests I did enjoy a long time ago. As well as the main stages there was an Old Time Music hall where you could escape from the myriads of people for a spot of jazz. There was also the Church of Heavenly Delights where you could see comedy acts including Joel Creasey and The Big Hoo Ha. Falls has had some bad press in other states but in Freo I definately think they achieved an eclectic chilled out vibe.

New Years Eve: The Aviary 

This year was a tough one to choose in Perth, every venue seemed to have an intriguing theme and there was something for the champagne or the goon bag budget. Last years celebration was at The Stables. It had been great to move around the different areas of the venue (the dance floor and somewhere to recap on the dance floor antics). They had canapés all night and one free drink included with the ticket. The ticket price was an affordable $60 so you could have an extensive predrink at home and have a cheap and cheerful night. 

This year we decided a drinks and food package would take our fancy and we invested $145 in our New Years plans. The venue opened at 6pm and we got there at 8pm which is coincidentally when the drinks tab began. 

The effort they had put into transforming the venue paid off. On the bottom level where the restaurant normally is they had removed the tables and turned the centre bar into a massive Espresso Bar. They served other things but the Espresso Martinis were the Piece De Resistance. They had a rich coffee flavour offset with a Caramel tones. They were so delicious I could have drunk them all not. Luckily Thanya is quite the social butterfly (especially with a couple of drinks under her belt) and managed to befriend some gentleman who weren’t going to use their voucher so we had a couple more complimentary cocktails. 

Also on this level were 2 booths equipped with phone chargers which I’m sure were helpful for many people securing after parties or similar. There was a dig made that I would probably visit the booth but since upgrading to the IPhone 7 I’m alright! 

On the other side were 2 food stations. One a ‘three cheese toastie’ grilling station and the other a Po Boy sandwich bar. The toastie was delicious and rich with a hint of spicy mustard and a buttery sourdough exterior. The Po Boy spicy and fresh tasting.

Last and probably least (hehe) was the Flower posing wall. Perhaps my expectations were high but I had imagined a Fox and Rabbit-esque garland and it was more of a 70s budget wedding look, sorry Aviary 😉


Upstairs was a Pimp your Pimms bar which was super cute and had heaps of fresh fruit including Watermelon, Strawberry, orange as well as Mint and Rosemary. It was nice to have something refreshing and low in alchohol ensure dignity was maintained for the whole night. Tucked in the corner there was hiding a doughnut station which I hear was lovely and had a large selection of Krispy Kreme style treats. 

The feature upstairs was definately the dance floor. This was pumping all night and played some real bangas. Everyone was in merry New Years spirits and we made many friends. The first being Frankie a guy from the East Coast who had flown over to visit family and decided to risk it, buy a ticket and ride solo for the night. He advised us we were his new best friends and a refreshing break from the cliquey Perth set he had encountered. As swiftly as we were friends we weren’t friends and he was off to schmooze another set of ladies in his quest. I can’t remember the names of our other new friends but they all gave us a big laugh. 

After visiting all the pop up bars a few times we danced, shouted the count down and left when it shut at the dignified hour of 1am. Looking around it looked like there were many new budding romantics not wanting to peel themselves off each other. 

I’m sure you’re all wondering how I pulled up and the answer is id give my head a 7 out of 10, probably the best I’ve felt on New Years Day since I was 15. I felt so good the girls and I trotted off to IKEA for their $1 breakfast. I didn’t expect much but it was actually delicious and the crispy short but bacon and hash brown restored me to a 9/10. Apparently it is $2 every Saturday. Would recommend, it may become a thing! 

Guest post:Two weeks on the Gibb River Road

Although I would have liked to go everywhere unfortunately that hasn’t happened yet! I have a habit of jumping on a plane at any chance I get and haven’t taken the time to see all the delightful sights in my own backyard. So, today I am pleased to present a guest post from Rebecca  who has put together her amazing 15 day trek: 

After much anticipation we finally headed off on our great Gibb River Road adventure in April this year. My husband has been working in Darwin so he was up there with the car and I flew into Darwin from Perth. We spent a night out at Corroboree with relatives before heading off. Much to my delight all the work had been done prior to my arrival so I simply put my bag in the car and climbed in the passenger’s seat.For anyone who hasn’t been to Darwin in April it’s hot so be prepared to spend a day or two acclimatising!

Day One: We drove down the Stuart Highway and watched as the scenery changed from lush tropical green to a dried out brown scrub with the occasional bit of green form a tree.

Just after lunch we arrived at Edith falls (3 hours from Darwin city)  and set up camp. I was melting and couldn’t wait to get in the water. We headed up the track to the top of the falls. I saw the sign that said the walk was 1km and stupidly thought great a nice easy walk. Wrong, well maybe not if you’re fit and used to the thousand degree temperature and it wasn’t the middle of the day. Hmm first lesson learnt. It was up hill and there were some pretty special spots to stop and enjoy the view (read between the lines catch your breath and have a drink).

Now you will just have to believe me that the walk was well and truly worth it and it was a stunning waterfall and water hole at the top because our camera decided this was a good time to pack it in so we did not capture the perfect photo but there was plenty of opportunity to do that. The water was that perfect cool but not too cold temperature and despite it being a long weekend and lots of people visiting its vast size meant we had plenty of space to ourselves. The walk back to camp was all down hill and a very pleasant stroll in the much cooler afternoon. We had an early night at a rowdy camp ground  getting ready for our next adventure.

Day Two: We were up bright and early, had breakfast and  packed up leaving Edith falls before 8am. We drove to Katherine for breakfast and a refuel. We didn’t have a look around but I know there are plenty of places to explore around Katherine and we plan to go back. After breakfast it was on to Kununurra. The drive between Katherine and Kununurra is long but the monotony of my singing along the long straight stretches of road was broken up with breathtaking views as you would crest a hill. There was so much different scenery and the red cliffs started appearing making you feel like you were really headed to the Kimberley.

We stopped at the check point to Western Australia and were searched for fruit and vegetables and gained an extra hour and a half thanks to the time difference.

We arrived in Kununurra in the early afternoon and set up camp at the lakeside caravan park. It is a beautiful caravan park and we had a great campsite overlooking the lake. There weren’t many other people in the park as the tourist season hadn’t kicked off yet so we enjoyed uninterrupted views and plenty of space.

We stocked up on fresh food now we were in WA and could safely buy what we needed without putting any industry at risk, we also needed to buy a pillow for Jason who thought sharing a pillow would be okay, he could not have been more mistaken. We had an early dinner at the pool bar before tucking into bed ready for our 3:30am start the next day.

Day Three: We got up well and truly before the sun to get ready and head off to the Dawn

Service. This is held on ANZAC hill in Kununurra and is a beautiful spot to watch the sunrise. It was a nice service and it was a good temperature in the morning but as the sun rose it promised to be another scorching day. There was an impressive turnout for the service and you could tell you had made it to the outback as all of the cars were 4wds.We had a quick breakfast at camp before packing up and heading off to Wyndham.

We had a swift drive through town before heading to Ivanhoe crossing. Jase was pretty devastated to see it was closed but seeing the water rushing across the road I wasn’t too keen on trying to drive across. We got out and had a look around and took some picture before getting back on the road.

We got to Wyndham and headed up to 5 Rivers look out for a good birds eye view of the area. There are great views in all directions although there was a thick fog while we were there so I am sure it is even more spectacular when you get a clear day. We went down to the wharf so Jase could show me where he had launched his boat when he headed off on his boys own adventure a couple of years before.

We checked out the giant Crocodile statue and took some pictures and made friends with a couple of the locals who gave us some advice on directions.

We headed to the Karunjie track stopping at the damn on the way for a quick look. We stopped below the damn at the big boab trees for a quick bite to eat and a taste of a boab nut which I am told is the richest source of vitamin C. I believe it because it tastes much like a honeycomb textured vitamin C tablet with a very bitter after taste.

We stopped to look at a local Aboriginal art site although it was scorching hot and there were wasps everywhere we managed to see some of the art and you could tell that it was a very special place.

We got back on the track and drove to a prison boab tree. I convinced Jase to get in for a photo but he quickly jumped back out because there were wasps inside. It was a very impressive tree and there would be a significant amount of history to be told if it was able to talk.

We made our way up to the salt pan and Jase and I had very different views of this part of the trip, Jase was in awe of the place and wanted to keep stopping and taking it all in. To me it was huge expanse of parched earth cracking in a heat so hot you could see a mirage, to Jase it was a huge expanse of endless possibility getting to forge his way along trying to guess the right path with no markers. I am fairly certain he was secretly wishing or maybe not even so secretly that he was there with the boys and not me.

We made our way off the salt pan and bush bashed our way down the path until we found a beautiful campsite late in the afternoon. We were exhausted and hot but were treated to a magical view of the sun setting and throwing light across the orange cliffs on the ridge opposite us. We could also see the river which was beautiful in the afternoon light.

Day Four: Another early day waking up before the sun to watch it rise across the ridges and over the river. Well worth the early rise and given I don’t do mornings as a general rule that is saying something.

We headed off and not far around the corner we started the Gibb River Road, there was lots of excitement and photos and we stopped and watched some other cars cross the river while we took in the view. I can describe it and even show you photos but this really is a must see experience and I hope everyone gets to do it at least once.

We made our way to home valley station which was our planned destination for the night but it was still closed until the 29th of April so we quickly changed plans and pushed on. Not long up the road was a great look out and well worth a stop in and look around, it is really spectacular part of Australia and if the sun wasn’t trying to melt you into a puddle you could spend a lot of time taking in the view.

We stopped at a “waterfall” a little further up the road but after a really short walk down a little track we discovered the water wasn’t running. We knew it had been a dry wet season but I was a little shocked that the waterfall wasn’t running at all and grateful we had decided to make the trip early.

We then headed off the track a little in search of Jacks waterhole, we found a spot where we thought the homestead used to be and had a look around. You could see relics of old sinks and roofing. You could imagine how isolated living out here would be particularly during the wet season.

Drysdale Station

We made our way to Drysdale River Station and found some beautiful grassy and shady campsites, there weren’t many people around and it was a very pleasant place to stay. This may have been enhanced by the fact that it wasn’t too hot that afternoon and we were treated to another pretty special sunset.

Day Five: It was a coolish night and for the first time I actually needed a blanket instead of an air conditioner. I was pretty excited it was still cool when we got up and had convinced myself it was a cool change. I do kid myself sometimes.

Our first stop of the day was at a cultural site with some Aboriginal art. It was a well cared for area and there were dedicated paths for tourists to explore on. If you are into Aboriginal art there are plenty of great spots to see some art with amazing history. I was lucky enough to get a lot of history of the art from Jase who has an interest in the history of the Kimberley region and has done a bit of research.

Mununurru Waterhole

We then headed to Munurru falls, this is a stunning spot and we were lucky enough to have it to ourselves. The waterfall was strong and a beautiful sight to see. We explored around and eventually Jase convinced me it was a safe spot for a swim. Signs aren’t enough for me, I am terrified of crocodiles no matter how many times I’m told it’s safe if something brushes me I’m screaming. Jase did very gently point out there is a ladder that gets put in to step into the waterhole so it can hardly be dangerous. We had a very beautiful swim and then enjoyed some lunch by the water.

Next we bumped our way up about 65kms of corrugations to the Mitchell Falls campsite. We came across a dingo on the way out that looked like it needed a good feed and I knew I wasn’t venturing too far from camp on my own at night.

We set up camp and had an early dinner ready for an early start the next day. After being warned about 10 times to be careful of all the bull ants around I managed to stand in a nest while draining water from our cooking. Thinking I was being splashed with some boiling water it took me a little longer than it should have to realise that was actually bull ants biting my legs. I don’t recommend standing in one of their nests although I’m certain the dance I did when I realised what was happening was very entertaining.

Day Six: It was a warm night and an early start for us to get out to the falls. We headed out before sunrise and walked by ourselves along the track as the landscape came alive as the sun kissed the trees and rockery with the first morning rays. The sun was not this romantic to me later in the day when I was certain it was trying to cook me alive.

We made our way to Mertens falls (big, there are two one called big one called little) and had a good look around. It was an impressive waterfall due to the sheer size of the drop but the water was more trickling down than thundering. We were able to climb around and get a really good view back on towards the waterfall.

We kept going towards Mitchell falls and had it all to ourselves as we enjoyed the view from the campground side. The water was thundering down fall after fall and it really is a sight to see.

We continued making our way around the fall and at the water crossing we came across four young people who had caught the helicopter out the night before and had become lost while trying to make their way back to camp in the dark. They looked hungry, tired and very relieved to see people, we pointed them in the right direction before exploring around the top of the falls.

We made our way carefully through the water to the other side of the falls,  stopping for some morning tea before making our way to the lookout from the other side of the falls. This side of the falls gives a totally different perspective and a better view of more of the falls. We enjoyed taking in the spectacular view before starting to make our way back to camp. There were a  lot of people making their way to the falls on our way back.

It was getting hot as we made our way towards camp and we stopped at Little Mertens fall for a swim. It’s a beautiful spot that we had entirely to ourselves. The water was cool and refreshing and much needed in the heat of the day, most of the waterhole is in shade and it was like our own little tropical paradise. It isn’t hard to imagine how essential these oases must be in the harsh hot climate of the Kimberley.

We finished our swim and finished the rest of the walk back to camp. We were very grateful we had made the walk early as the full heat of the day was scorching. It is a 8.6km return walk to the falls which is a nice easy walk in the cool weather but would be punishing in the full heat of the day.

There were some minor repairs to the car made in the afternoon with some screws having being rattled loose on the trip out and we had another early night after a full on day.

Day Seven: We had an early start which was probably mostly due to the heat driving us out of the ten. We left camp by 7:30am and were already hot and sweaty.

We bashed our way back down the track but our early start meant we saw a lot more on our way, there were two dingoes, a frilled neck lizard right in the middle of the track. Jase got out of the car and tried to make himself big to try and get the lizard to put his frills out but I think I heard him say “stupid tourists” as he ran off the track and behind a tree. We also come across a bull in the middle of the track hanging out in a puddle of water, I could hardly blame it the day was already hot.

Kalumburu terrain

Kalumburu. The road is more like an old track but it wasn’t too bad a drive. We stopped off at the mission when we first got into town. We had a look at their museum which is amazing and well worth a visit. It has a history of the mission, the history of Kalumburu through the war as well as some Aboriginal history and art. They had gorgeous slate etchings that were intricate and beautiful as well as boab carvings and paintings.


We were lucky enough to get a tour through the mission bakery where they used to make bread for the whole community. There were still loaf tins rusted and laid out as if ready to be used again. They also had the press that was used to make holy bread. The old ovens, kitchen and bread mixer were also still there. Out the back of the kitchen was a big field that leads down to the river. This used to be full of vegetable gardens and fruit tress but was only grass while we were there.

We looked around the rest of the grounds, the accommodation, the camp ground, where they keep the chickens and where they are trying to grow a new vegetable garden. We also had a quick look through the church, which has some impressive artwork. We couldn’t stay long though as the kids had just come to use the church so we needed to get out of their way.

We headed to the local store which was pretty well stocked and reasonably priced for what we were expecting in such an isolated community. We then headed off to McGowen beach campground. We were the first people to arrive for the season and we set up camp in a clump of trees just below the amenities block and above the beach. It is a beautiful spot but it was extremely hot while we were there. I know I say how hot it is a lot but if you travel early or late in the season you need to be prepared for the extreme heat, particularly if you are coming from down south and aren’t used to the tropical heat.

After a beautiful sunset on the beach we were met back at camp by three little dogs living on the grounds, later five pink pigs came over to say hello. I ran into their Mum and Dad on the way to the toilet and got the fright of my life, they were huge and the pig was sitting right where you needed to go past to get to the toilet so I went back to camp to get myself an escort to the toilet so I wouldn’t get gouged to death by pig (while that was probably unlikely I don’t like to take any chances).

It was a warm night and difficult to sleep with the heat and with the bats in the trees above us and the pigs rooting around on the ground.

Day Eight: We were up before the sun for a spot of fishing and to watch the sunrise. Not much luck with the fish but it was a beautiful sunrise in between me asking Jase to step back further from the waterline for fear he was going to get taken by a crocodile.

We saw the resident croc in the water and his slide marks on the sand. A walk over to the next bay and there were slide marks on that beach too. The slide marks went all the way up the beach and into the bush, if I wasn’t already terrified of crocodiles getting me I definitely was after seeing that.

After a big breakfast we headed off for a day of exploring we saw the local emu before we left camp. This camp ground is definitely a good place to stay if you like seeing animals both tame and wild.

We went for a drive and looked for the WW2 bomber wrecks. After a bit of bush bashing we found the site. It was incredible to imagine how hard the plane must of hit to scatter the wreckage the way it was scattered and sad to think of the impact of that crash.

Next we drove to some beautiful rock formations not far away. Jase went exploring looking for some art while I stayed in the shack and Jase found a little bit of art but the heat and the long thick grass and spinifex made it too hard to have a really good look.

We made our way down to the river and had a look at some beautiful spots. It was stunning scenery and while I enjoyed the view Jase regretted not bringing his fishing rod.

We had a look at the barge landing before heading out to honeymoon bay for a look around. It is a beautiful spot with some lovely huts and one beautiful one down on the beach in a perfect spot that would be amazing with a little bit of TLC. The water was stunning but there was no chance I would be brave enough to have a swim. After the tour around we went back to the office for a cuppa with Les and Joy and their little boy Oliver and baby girl. They are a lovely family and no doubt in my mind this is the place you would want to stay at if you were coming to visit the area with your family or partner.

We headed back to camp and a boys trip had set up camp at one of the other sites. Jase was enviously looking on at their dual cab Landcruiser with a boat hooked up and another boat at their site. After some yahooing they went to launch their boats. From the shade of the campsite I watched as the first boat got into the water with a lot of swimming going on and the car getting bogged. As the only other car they had, had a boat on the back Jase went down and snatched them out of the bog. The audience was very boisterous with a lot of advice for the poor guy who had got bogged. Next the Landcruiser launched its boat and also got bogged and Jase snatched them out again. They were finally on their way and the campground quietened down significantly.

The boys out fishing asked Jase to keep an eye on their campsite for them. While they were away the pigs got into their camp and tore open their bin bags and knocked over their stuff and in general ran amok. We (I) picked up all the rubbish and put it in one of our garbage bags. We kept shooing the pigs away but the campsite was a pig sty to start with from with food and dirty cooking utensils everywhere and the pigs could smell the food and just kept coming back.

A little bit later the local Police came to the campsite and checked the boys camp. They walked though and went and spoke to the ladies in the yard and then went and spoke to Alex (the manager) before coming back down and counting how many cartons of beer were in the cars.During this time we were staying well away from the boys camp and the pigs came back and tore open a bag of dog food and two minute noodles and had a great old time. Alex came down and kept shooing them away.The Police said the boys gave a carton to a local family and they had gone straight into the community and started drinking it. They said if any more of the beer turned up in the community they would seize the car. There were about 20 cartoons of beer in the boys cars and it is a dry community and is an offence to bring in alcohol.

The boys came back from their fishing trip and were a little nervous especially the guy with the LandCruiser the Police threatened to seize.They took it in their stride though and gave us two fish for helping them out and Jase filleted them and we ate them for dinner, they were delicious.

Day Nine: After a stinking hot and noisy night we attempted an early start. After packing up we made our way up to the house for some fuel and to pay for our camping but no one

was up. I waited in the car while Jase tried to find someone who was awake. The emu came right up to the window of the car and I was too terrified to move. It was so close I could have touched it but I was too scared to do anything at all. Jase found it entertaining and kept yelling out to me don’t be scared it can smell your fear. Of course that did nothing to calm me down. Once the emu moved off and let me breathe we went for a walk around the beach until someone was up. We eventually fuelled up and headed off.

We made our way to the tip to get rid of our rubbish, the tip is a giant pit you drive to off the road and though an open gate and throw your rubbish in. It looks like at some point someone comes along and burns all the rubbish.

We then went searching for a waterhole that Jase had seen on one of the many camping shows he watches. We found a turn off and bumped and bashed our way down a track that most of the time I couldn’t even see and found a little oasis. It is a gorgeous little swimming hole in the middle of a rock formation surrounded by bush. It was beautiful and cool and worth the bumpy trip.

We hit the road back to Drysdale station. We stopped in a Munurru falls for lunch and a swim on the way back. Nice and refreshed we headed into Drysdale. On our way we came across an adult and adolescent emu that played chicken with our car. I was definitely more chicken than they were.

We fuelled up at Drysdale before setting up camp. We did some washing and had a shower ready for when the bar opened at 4pm. We were the first customers at the bar and we met some characters that weren’t far behind us. Paul and Jocelyn from Yarawonga and Anna and Andy who were form the Czech Republic and Mauritius and were on their honeymoon travelling from Kalgoorlie to Melbourne. Both couples had just pulled in and stopped for a quick drink before setting up camp.

They went to set up camp and Jase had to go and get the bushmans and the thermacell as the mozzies were trying to carry me away. We met another couple from Emu Park in Queensland and I was excited I knew exactly where they were talking about and they were excited because I was the first person who knew where they were from. We also met another couple from Perth but he was from Mitchell in Queensland originally and was impressed I knew where that was too.

It was a very entertaining night and we kicked on for a bit with Paul, Jocelyn, Anna and Andy. It was a nice cool night and stayed cool all night which was very enjoyable.

Day Ten: It was a slow start to the day having to get all of the dew off the camping gear. It was already warm when we headed off and we made our way to Mount Elizabeth Station. Everyone we came across were telling us it was closed but Jase kept asking everyone along the way if it was open and one bloke said it was open but everyone else kept saying no it’s closed.

There were no signs saying it was closed when we got to the turn off so we decided to head in. We arrived and were very happy to find out it was open. Pat the manager said if we wanted to go to the gorge we needed to go in the next hour.

We set up camp and had a quick lunch before heading off. It was a slow bumpy 10kms of track in the car, it was so rough that the 10kms took us an hour.

We stopped 1km short of the carpark and walked the rest of the way. It wasn’t too long before I wished we had kept driving. The spear grass was shocking and scratching us continuously and it was really hot. We made our way down the path and to Wunnumurru gorge. It was beautiful, the gorge was a stream running into a waterfall and down into a gorgeous big waterhole with a nice sandy shore and a sandy bottom. It was lovely to swim in and we were lucky enough to have the entire place to ourselves.

our swim we needed to make our way back to camp to get there before dark. We walked down the track and by the time we got back to the carpark it was overcast with a nice breeze and threatening to rain. We briskly walked back to the car before bumping our way back to the campground. We arrived just after sunset but before it had gotten dark.


We had a shower and made some dinner before going to bed. That night it poured with rain. It was a beautiful temperature relief and it was nice to lay in the tent listening to the rain. We managed to stay dry with all the windows open so it was a very pleasant night.

Day Eleven: We had a late start to the day as we waited for the rain to dry off our camping gear. By the time we left camp it was already promising to be a very hot day.

First stop was at the Barnett River gorge on Gibb River Station. A short drive and a nice easy walk down to a little baby water fall and waterhole. Another short walk and a gorgeous big waterhole and a little waterfall were at the end.

Back on the road don to Barnett River Road house for a quick stop and drink and decision on where to head next.

Our next stop was at Galvan’s gorge which is the most accessible from the Gibb. It is a gorgeous little waterhole with a waterfall that was only trickling. There was also some Wanjina rock art. It was quite a popular spot and there were a few people there while we were there.

We got back on the road and headed to Silent Grove campground. We made a very late lunch before deciding 3pm was too late to visit the gorge. We went for a walk around the lake near camp before spending the afternoon relaxing with a few cold beverages.

It was so hot that we set up the portable air conditioner to sleep for the night.

Day Twelve: A very early start to the day to visit Bell Gorge. It was a reasonable walk (Jase kept calling it easy although I think easy was an understatement) to a stunning waterfall and waterhole. It was a magic spot and with such an early start we got the place to ourselves.

We explored around and Jase went for a swim. I stayed dry and explored around the waterhole. We didn’t see anyone until we were on our way back out of the gorge. By the time we made it out to the carpark it was already filling up.

Back at the almost deserted camp ground we had some breakfast and packed up.

We hit the road again and headed through the ranges into Windjana. It was a great drive and the scenery was stunning. It was ridiculously hot at Windjana and we set up camp before waiting for the day to cool down a bit so we could head off exploring. By early afternoon we gave up waiting for the day to cool down and went for a walk through the gorge. It was gorgeous in the gorge and there were fresh water crocodiles everywhere. We enjoyed the coolness of the gorge the stunning scenery and crocodile spotting before heading back to camp.

Jase cooked us a roast for dinner in the camp oven which was delicious but the fire only added to the heat which was oppressive. It stayed hot all night and I was grateful to have the portable air conditioner. It poured down raining a few times through the night which probably explained the extreme.


Windjana Gorge


Day Thirteen: It was a hot pack up the next day before we headed off towards Tunnel Creek. We stopped off and saw the ruins of a Police station before driving into Tunnel Creek.

We had a look through the cave which is interesting and beautiful. We had the place to ourselves for most of the time with another couple in there for part of it but no one else. You walk through the water and as there was no one in front of us you could see and hear the fresh water crocodiles getting in the water as you got close to them so I kept a very good eye on where my feet were going.

We headed off to Fitzroy Crossing and made it in time for lunch. We had lunch at the hotel before setting up camp and having a look around town. We got back to camp and the showers weren’t working. Jase was worried we would miss the bar opening hours so we headed off to dinner without a shower. Luckily by the time we came back the water was fixed and we could have a decent shower before bed.

It poured raining all night and we had a wet pack up the next day.

Day Fourteen: We left Fitzroy crossing and on our way out we had to stop and help a couple of blokes on the side of the road who had gotten bogged. Jase snatched them out and we made our way to a rest stop 100kms out of town.

The rest stop is a great spot on the crest of a hill with good amenities and panoramic views. I even got cold while we were up there which was a nice feeling. We had some breakfast before getting back on the road.

Lake Argyle

We made our way to Kunnunuru and arrived in the early afternoon. We headed towards Lake Argyle and Jase wanted to try and catch a Barra but after a number of attempts to find the track to where you can fish we gave up and headed to the camp ground. We drove on to Lake Argyle and turned up at a packed camp ground . Turned out we had managed to rock up on the weekend of the Lake Argyle swim. We managed to get a campsite on the edge of the oval overlooking cliffs so although it was packed it was beautiful.

We had a quiet night after a long day of driving.

Day Fifteen: We got up early and went and had a look at the infinity pool which looked magical but it was too early for it to be opened. We went out to the damn wall and had a look at the view from the top. It was an impressive expanse of water.

We got back in the car and spent the rest of the day driving to Darwin with a couple of breaks along the way. We got back late in the afternoon and were exhausted after a very long day of driving.

There were so many other places that you could have stopped and explored and plenty of gorgeous places we didn’t get to discover, if you can handle the heat early in the season is a magical time to go there are minimal tourists and you will get the best of the waterfalls before the start to dry out but regardless of when you go the scenery is amazing and it is truly a beautiful adventure in our very own backyard.

Dunsborough dining: Piari & Co 

We left work at 5pm on Friday for the 2 and a half hour drive from Perth to Dunsborough. As predicted it was a battle through traffic for the first 45 kms. As we would be reaching our destination at 8:30pm I had figured our only option would be pub ‘3 Bears’ which we normally end up at for some pub grub. I perused trip advisor though and came across some great reviews for “Piari & Co”. They were booked out but had a booking available at 830pm which worked out splendidly. It ended up being the best decision this year. The food was incredible, as Kristian said “it was like they had taken flavours that you’re used to and elevated them into to the best version of themselves”. They have one of those menus that is difficult to order from as you want to try everything so we lashed out and shared two entrees. 

First pick was the Seared North West Scallops, soffrito mayonnaise, lemony sprouts, Jamon crumble and ink crisps. Everything about this dish just made sense and complimented each other providing the right mix of saltiness and zestiness. 

The other entrèe we couldn’t resist was the ‘Yallingup Cheese Company ‘vache curd’, asparagus, black garlic custard, duck breast prosciutto’. Just as delicious as it sounds a creamy indulgence with just enough asparagus to not feel any guilt. 

I normally can’t go past fresh Fish on a menu particularly when it’s described on the menu as ‘Fish of the moment’ but this time I couldn’t go past the Marinated Harvey beef hanger steak with roast kipfler potatoes, wilted spinach and Cafe De Paris. It was everything I could have dreamed off, the steak was tender and tasty, the garlic butter on top mesmerising and the potatoes that unobtainable combination of crisp and soft. The men had the ‘Arkady Lamb rump, shoulder pie, local oyster mushrooms, green peas, broad beans and feta’. Again everything was delectable but the shoulder pie stood out due to the dreamy texture of the pasty, the perfect flavour and just the right amount of flakiness. 

By the time we’d eaten all this and a nice amount of wine we could barely think about dessert,  but we did anyway. Luckily the dessert menu was concise so choosing 2 was slightly easier given there were 3 sweet options. We settled on the ‘Lemon curd ‘bombe alaska’, berry soup’ as well as the ‘blood orange & praline bavarois, pistachio custard, pistachio meringue’. The bombe Alaska was my favourite with it’s syrupy rich berry goodness. The bavarois I liked for its interesting flavours and the way it contrasted the fluffy cake like pistachio bits with the crispness of the meringue. 

All this is basically a long way of saying if your in Dunsborough get to this restaurant! Actually go to Dunsborough just to try it and feast on the delicious, seasonal and locally produced goods. 

Eurotrip: Paris

Day 1: My friend Sophie and I jetted to Paris from Perth airport. We booked with Virgin

which ended up being a Singapore Airlines flight. The flight wasn’t too bad there was an abundance of movies and the service was great. The food was influenced by the authentic side of Asian cooking so I would probably request Vegetarian next time. In Paris we decided to use Air Bnb. My friend Kristian looked for a reasonable hotel and ended up paying $400 a night so glad we only spent $120 and had extra pocket money for Parisian cuisine! At the airport there are plenty of train stops so we caught a train to our apartment. Our apartment was  on Avenue Du Bruteil in the 7th Arondissement. It was a fairly quiet, tree lined street, close to the train and a short walk to the Eiffel or a longer walk to the bustle of Paris. The apartment itself was a super cute studio with beautiful views out the window and nice and quiet. There were a flew flights of stairs which added to the enormous daily cardio workout of roaming Paris. If you’re

At the Lourve

interested you can find it under ‘Charming Studio Paris – Invalides’ with hosts Raphaelle and Dominique. They were lovely and left us to our own devices, dropping in once to make sure we found everything okay. I loved the extra touches of the yoghurt, nutella and Nespresso machine! We headed out and just started wandering, our first stop the Opera – Palais Garnier. It’s 11 Euros to walk around but I loved seeing it, the gold and meticulous detail is beautiful to see. The top item on our to-do list was French Macarons so we ventured to the famous  Ladurée that has been making them since 1862. We got a couple each and a chocolate croissant and ate them in the cute park next door “Jardin des Tuileries”. It had pretty stone pathways and a carousel. Then it was time to cross of Number 2 on the essential Paris list, the Eiffel Tower (I can imagine Kristian cringing if he ever bothers to read this). We booked the Eiffel climb with Get Your Guide before hand and got it a bit cheaper. Unfortunately the weather was gross, we were

The Laduree Shop

covered in sweat and laboriously applying sunscreen it was tempting to ditch the line and go back to our place but likededicated tourists we perserved! A lawyer I had a settlement conference with had spent a month living in Paris and had recommended we try ‘La Grand Cremerie’. I was sold, maybe even just for the opportunity to say the name lots of times. They had amazing platter of purely meats or purely cheeses. Not recommended for vegans. It was a simple dinner but felt very hipster Parisian eating a dinner pretty much entirely of that. We had a tomato salad with it to make it healthy. It’s a restaurant I would go back to even just for its vibe and impeccable service. Our only mistake was ordering the cheapest wine on the menu which was a Beaujolais variety. Soph and I usually pick a Shiraz and this one was more a sweet cordial-like wine probably more suited to non-wine drinkers. Nevertheless we finished it! 


Jardin Des Tuileries

Day 2: The second day it was straight to the Louvre to further cement our tourist life and have the obligatory photoshoot outshoot the glass prism. We bought a Paris Museum pass

from the tourist bureau as Sophie anticipated she would be given me an educational experience at lots of museums in the time we were there. I was impressed at how big the Louvre was so many rooms we got completely lost and it took us hours to find the Mona Lisa. As everyone knows by now it is very small and there is a consistent crowd around the picture so you’re unlikely to get anything cool for you instagram. Eventually we dragged ourselves away and promised to see more another day. Right outside there are beautiful gardens so stopped at a Paul kiosk for a baguette and Danish. The Paul chain is everywhere in Paris but the quality is amazing like a home made bakery. I was surprised how different the range of sandwiches is,  it’s rare to see wholegrain and more than 2 ingredients. Pretty much just ‘ham and cheese’ or ‘cheese and tomato’ at any shop I saw. We managed to fit the Notre Dame in in the afternoon as well. I was glad to see it but a long queue and even longer if you wanted to go upstairs. For dinner we were joined by 2 friends from Perth Kristian and Marcus. We decided on Boullion Rancine as we were excited to get stuck into some traditional French food. The décor is stunning and of the Belle-époque era you get transported into another world. The prices were reasonable and we went with the 3 course meal. The Crème Brulee was next level. After dinner we strolled through Paris and had a few drinks at the alfresco bars to cap off the night.


Day 3: On Tuesday we traipsed over to the 10th Arondissement. For those that don’t know Paris there are 20 Arrondissements kind of like suburbs , the 1st is a small segment around

the Louvre and they curl around in a snail formation. We had entrusted Kristian with finding a hipster coffee establishment and he had found Le Poutch, a cute little coffee shop with delicious coffee and small breakfast items. We were right near the Canal Saint Martin so walked up there. There are lots of cool hipster clothing shops and cafes around this area, it is a nice walk and also the first time I can remember seeing a ‘swing bridge’. It is a bridge for cars on a pivot that swings around to allow boats through. Then it was time to make Kristian’s childhood dream come true – a Charcuterie Board picnic in Paris. There were lots of Boulangerie’s (bakeries) and small good stores around so we collected some meats, cheeses, pastries and a bottle of Rosé and took them the Sacre Couer. There is an amazing view of most of Paris from here. That afternoon Soph and I went to see the Catacombs. The boys left us after seeing the line. It was a 37 degree day and the line was about 2 hours. There was a lot of

sunscreen applied that day! I think it was worth the wait. We grabbed an audio guide and heard the history of the 1780’s and why the catacombs started. It felt a bit spooky at the start but it’s a 45 minute walk through and by the end you’re used to the around 6 million skeletons stacked around you. Dinner that night was at Victor. It was such a good night, the bartenders were awesome and the wine was delicious. We ended up buying so many bottles of Chardonnay as it was the best we had had! Most of our dinner we booked with TheFork.com.au its really easy on there and they email/text you confirmation. Often they have discount offers and you can get 30% off at a lot of places .


Day 4: Once again we were up and attem! This time off to see the Arc De Triomphe. We

got there before it opened and once again endured the glaring heat. Never going to Paris in July again!  There is a 284 step climb to the top. You could probably guess from the amount we’ve crammed in but we did a lot of steps in Paris, 30000 most days. The other notable feature of the Arc is that it’s surrounded by the craziest round about in Paris. 12 busy roads intersect it. The district around it is very fancy lots of very well dressed people. We explored the Champs Élysées which had some cool shops (we didn’t notice anywhere to eat though). The Abercrombie & Fitch store there is next level it’s like a 3 storey mansion covered in ivy with a stone path. Afterwards Sophie had to get her museum fix so we trundled off to La Conciergerie. It used to be part of the royal palace and later became a prison, famously housing Marie Antoinette. We had been living a bit decadently for the last few days so we decided to hit the Latin Quarter for dinner. We had spotted an abundance of blackboards outside

restaurants with 3 course bargains. I won’t tell you where we ate as it was terrible! For dessert we spotted an ice cream store that was incredible. We went to Amorino it had so many flavours and you could get as many as you want arranged in a flour. I had a mix of gelato and ice cream and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Put it on your must eat list!

Day 5:  Our last day in Paris and time to take off on our Dijon adventure. We hadn’t been to the restaurant next door so we dropped into ‘La Tour de Nesle’ for the ‘petit-dejeuner’. At most places in France this is a plain croissant, a coffee and an orange juice. Then it was time to carry our suitcases down 5 flights of stairs and catch the train to Dijon.

What better to do after a Saturday night where you discovered how to make Espresso Martinis than continue drinking. I decided to deal with my hangover in a classy way and meet two of my friends at The Petition: Beer Corner. This place is definitely a foolproof place to meet with your friends. If they’re not beer drinks there’s a wine bar. If you get hungry there’s bar food or you can head over to the other restaurants in the vicinity. Kristian had been the instigator of the venue, having scoured the Internet for the most insta-worthy place for lunch. He had found their post of a Gin and Tonic teamed up with Prawns, Chilli, Pepper and lemon and his heart was set. We got there about 1:30pm on Sunday and there was a steady but small trickle of people. As usual the service was impeccable. Previously I haven’t been able to decide on a beer and the bartender has been happy to describe them in more detail/let me have a little try before I buy. I can’t tell you what the beers are like because I’m in the love with the ‘Street beer’. It’s smooth, refreshing and

has just enough beery taste (is that a girly way to describe beer?!). They have a plethora of choice, there’s 18 beers just on tap and a choice of three size so every beer preference is accounted for. I was also game enough to ask for a Gin and Soda but they only serve Gin and Tonic (it’s on tap). They did suggest I could head over the wine bar if I really wanted one. Hoping to create the same delectable Insta photo we ordered the prawns. In our quest we didn’t really consider if we wanted to eat them. They were yummy, crispy and the smaller kind that you eat whole. I’m a bit squeamish about eating the whole body so I managed about 3. The standout was the ceviche served in a delicate shell that made it finger food and piled with avocado and lime juice to compliment the white fish. We also had the chorizo which was



really tasty and flavoursome and not too oily. After this we moved onto wine trying the Spanish wine, a 2014 Maetierra ‘Atlantis’. It was an Albariño variety which I haven’t heard off but I’d describe it as a light and a similar to a Sauvignon Blanc. Who knows how someone who knows proper terms about wine would describe it though!

After some wine and conversation the sun was starting to come about so we decided to venture to close by Elizabeth Quay. At the top of the Reveley is Henry’s Bar. They had a really cool duo playing some peppy but relaxing tunes. We took in the awesome view of the harbour and had one last drink to finish off our Sunday Sesh. I had the Destination Shanghai which was yummy and fruity, bright pink and in a Martini glass.
